An understanding of the moon calendar is an important ingredient in shamanism, because
Grandmother Moon is known as the guding light in the time of darkness. If a shaman does not understand this basic calendar, she/he is missing fundamental knowledge of the natural energy humans are subjected to on a daily basis, because this light-energy showers down upon the Tree of Trees. Up and down the tree the shaman climbs, spiraling between realities and nonrealities, material and immaterial, imaginable and unimaginable, space and non-space, time and non-time, the Light Order, the Confine and the Boundary.
With the shaman's back to the tree, she or he can move in several directions, for the shaman's universe is three tiered. In Faery Shamanism the three tiers are known as the Heavenly Realm, the Plains, and the UnderWorld. The shaman's calendar is based on the Coligny Calendar (a Gaulish calendar engraved on a bronze table that was unearthed in France in 1897). This calendar confirms the Celtic belief that darkness preceded light; therefore, the year begins at summer's end: winter's beginning. A combination Coligny and moon calendar is below.
